The teacher's school behind Ittō-ryū
Kanemaki-ryū (鐘捲流) is a school of Japanese swordsmanship associated with Kanemaki Jisai (鐘捲自斎), a swordsman of the Chūjō and Tomita line who taught in the sixteenth century. Its lasting importance is that Kanemaki Jisai is remembered as the teacher of Itō Ittōsai, founder of Ittō-ryū, making Kanemaki-ryū the direct bridge between the older Chūjō-ryū tradition and one of the most influential sword schools of Edo-period Japan.
A figure at the edge of the record
The life of Kanemaki Jisai is recorded largely through the traditions of the schools connected to him. He is said to have been a leading student of the Tomita branch of Chūjō-ryū before teaching under his own name. Because independent documentation is scarce, Ryūpedia treats his biography and the founding of Kanemaki-ryū as tradition rather than firmly established fact.

Carried on through Ittō-ryū
Kanemaki-ryū is not clearly documented as a continuous independent school surviving to the present day. Its influence, however, was decisive: through Itō Ittōsai it passed into the Ittō-ryū family, whose branches, including the orthodox Ono line, became among the most widely transmitted sword traditions of Japan.
