An Ittō-ryū of the Aizu domain
Mizoguchi-ha Ittō-ryū (溝口派一刀流) is a branch of Ittō-ryū associated with the Aizu domain in what is now Fukushima Prefecture. It takes its name from Mizoguchi Shingoemon Masakatsu, a swordsman of the Ittō-ryū line who developed a distinct transmission that took root in Aizu and became one of the sword schools officially maintained there during the Edo period.
A domain tradition
Much of the character of Mizoguchi-ha Ittō-ryū comes from its long association with a single Japanese domain rather than with the capital. Sword schools attached to a domain were taught to its retainers across generations, which tended to preserve a line faithfully but also to keep it local. Aizu was noted for the seriousness of its martial education, and the Mizoguchi branch was part of that domain's military culture in the later Edo centuries.

Distinctive emphases
Like other Ittō-ryū lines the branch is built around the school's characteristic decisive cutting, but each such line accumulated its own forms, teachings and emphases over generations of domain transmission. The precise early curriculum is less securely documented than the school's general descent, a common situation for traditions carried chiefly within one province.
Survival
The tradition did not vanish with the fall of the Aizu domain and the end of the samurai class, and it continues to be transmitted as a classical koryū connected to the Aizu region. Ryūpedia treats the school's Ittō-ryū descent and its domain history as documented, while noting that fine details of its earliest generations rest more on transmitted tradition than on independent record.
